Pacquaio vs Shane Mosley at 143 lb

Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer, Franklin Gacal, yesterday said if Miguel Cotto insists on the catchweight of 145 lb, the Filipino boxing icon might be forced to consider Shane Mosley as his next opponent.

“We will not agree to 145 pounds. And if Cotto insists, we’ll go for Mosley,” said Gacal from Davao City.

Mosley, the WBA welterweight champion, was so eager to face Pacquiao he said he’d fight at 144 lb, and settle for 40 percent of the purse. But the native of Pomona, California, had given up on the fight when it seemed all’s well for a Pacquiao-Cotto fight.

Maybe Pacquiao doesn’t like being defeated in anything, and must prove that if he can be a world champion in the ring, he can also win big in another arena.

But just to make sure, he’s not going for a rematch with the Antonino clan of his native South Cotabato, where the youthful Darlene Antonino-Custodio trounced him in the race for a congressional seat in 2007.

Instead “Pacman” is relocating to neighboring Sarangani, where he has already bought property to satisfy the residency requirement for those running for a seat in the House of Representatives in May 2010.

The fight between pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao and welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is not yet closed. According to a source, Pacquiao revealed that although negotiations for his proposed bout with Cotto are running smoothly, they have yet to agree on the purse split or the catch-weight for the bout.

Pacquiao admitted that he'd still like to shoot for a catch-weight of 142-143 pounds. However, Cotto's nutritionist said it would be impossible for him to get below 144 pounds. "Cotto is a welterweight and the nutritionist is saying the lowest he can go is 144. Manny will be fine with that. He doesn't want a guy to get in there and injure himself by fighting at an unrealistically low weight," Arum stated early last month.

The proposed mega-fight between pound-for-pound champ Manny Pacquiao and WBO Welterweight Champion, Miguel Cotto is getting intense. Many in the boxing community are scratching their heads over a matchup featuring a natural Junior-Lightweight and a fighter believed to have seen his better days.

If the proposed Cotto-Pacquiao fight were to come off as expected, it will happen because of tremendous concessions extracted from Cotto's side. Aside from a deeply-insulting 65/35 purse split in Manny's favor, Cotto will probably have to weigh in at no more than 145 lbs., his lightest weight since his WBO super-lightweight title defense victory over Paulie Malinaggi in 2006.

Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto have tentatively agreed to fight in Las Vegas on November 14, giving the world's best pound-for-pound boxer a very challenging fight against a highly ranked opponent .

The Los Angeles Times reports that Bob Arum, who promotes both Pacquiao and Cotto, says he's close to getting contractual arrangements worked out for Pacquiao and Cotto to fight each other. The fighters would have to agree on how they would split the purse and how much they'd both weigh before the deal can get done, but Arum indicated that Cotto not Shane Mosley is Pacquiao's likely next opponent:

A Cotto vs. Pacquiao fight would be one of the biggest of the year in boxing. But it wouldn't necessarily be a good thing for boxing fans, because it would also be a step away from the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather superfight that everyone wants to see.

Good news. Manny Pacquaio is having a movie with Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger. It will be titled "Wapakman", a comedy/science fiction (sci-fi) movie. WWE wrestler Batista will be also included in the film as he will play the role of Pacquiao’s mortal enemy.

“Wapakman” will be a story of a single dad who has acquired supernatural powers ala “Kung Fu Hustle”. It is expected to be released in theaters by December 2009.

Manny Pacquiao Is Boxing Athlete of the Year 2009

After burning the lines with his promoter, his adviser and an emissary from Malacañang, Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao agreed to cut short his scheduled family vacation, fly straight to the Big Apple and receive his Fighter of the Year award from the Boxing Writers Association of America on Saturday.

Pacquiao reportedly had second thoughts on personally receiving his second Fighter of the Year award from the BWAA, and in fact flew to Bohol yesterday morning after spending a night in Cebu City with his family, including wife Jinkee and kids Jimuel, Michael, Princess and Queen Elizabeth, and close friends.

Pacquiao will arrive there Friday morning, and can still afford a few hours of rest before gracing the BWAA dinner. The following evening he is also scheduled to watch the Miguel Cotto-Josh Clottey fight at Madison Square Garden along with Freddie Roach, who will receive the Trainer of the Year for the third time.
